CONSTIPATION is a side effect of Mounjaro, particularly at the start or increasing doses. It occurs because the medication slows the process of gastric emptying.
Why Mounjaro causes constipation:
Slowed Digestion: Mounjaro slows down the movement of food through the digestive tract, allowing more time for water to be absorbed, which hardens stools.
Reduced Intake: A significantly reduced appetite means less food and fibre intake, reducing the frequency of bowel movements.
Dehydration: Reduced appetite can lead to decreased fluid intake, which is a key contributor to constipation.
Other digestive issues caused:
Bloating
Gas
A feeling of fullness or heaviness
Abdominal cramps
Indigestion
Nausea
Helpful advice to help with the constipation:
Drink plenty of water. 2-3 litres daily. As mentioned, Mounjaro can contribute to dehydration.
Exercise and movement can help with peristalsis (movement through the bowel).
Co-ton herbal stool softeners from Primrose Clinic work really effectively at softening the stools.
Psyllium Husk is a water soluble fibre that is very effective in helping with constipation. It adds bulk to the stools and softens helping to regulate bowel movements.
COLON HYDROTHERAPY is a safe internal cleanse that hydrates the bowel, exercises the muscle of the bowel and brings fast relief to Constipation. It resets and helps to regulate bowel movements and clears waste backed up in the intestines.
Magnesium, especially in the form of magnesium citrate or oxide, draws water into the colon and helps soften stool naturally.
